BFA admissions |
Preparation The earlier we can begin working with a student in their high school career, the more time we have to help build the student’s exposure to art and design materials, classes, and experiences. The accumulation of art and design Experience can make a significant difference in the student’s depth of knowledge by the time they apply for admission to a college art and design program. Our work can also serve to ground the student during the challenging
high school years, giving them an increased sense of self esteem and
purpose. Assessment Does the student prefer to work with their hands creating pieces with traditional media? Or does the student love working with new technology? Does the student like collaborating with a team of other student artists/designers? Or does the student feel most comfortable working intensely on their own? By carefully considering who the student is we can begin to determine
areas of study and potential career directions for the student. With
this information, we can move on to identifying those schools which excel
in the areas that most interest the student. Identification: Finding a “Good Fit” Once a major or area of study is identified we develop a list of school which provide a good fit the needs, interests, and goals of the particular student. How do we determine if a college/university or art school is truly outstanding and may possibly be a “good fit” for a particular student? Just a few of the many questions we consider include: > What specific classes comprise the art & design majors offered? > Do the faculty have BFA and MFA degrees in the specialties they teach? > Is the art and design program fully accredited? > Is the college academically strong? > What percentage of
art & design students find jobs in their major within When identifying colleges which may be a “good fit” for a particular student, we also give consideration to the unique personal preferences of the student and their families. We want to find an environment in which the student will not only feel comfortable but will thrive. Once several colleges/universities or art schools are identified, the
student is encouraged to visit the schools with his/her family. Admissions Application When the student and his or her family have decided to which colleges
to apply, we can assist with the application process. Portfolio Development Working with a student on portfolio development is one of the most important services we provide. (Portfolios development or refinement should begin as soon as possible.) A crucial part of a student’s admission application to a selective art and design program is their portfolio. Some of the most outstanding art and design programs accept as few as 25% of the students who apply as freshmen. A student’s portfolio can mean the difference between being accepted to the program of their choice or having their application rejected. Beyond a favorable admissions decision, a stellar portfolio may help to earn a student a partial or full scholarship. |
