services for recent graduates and professionals
Art & Design Career Development Advising
We provide career development services for recent art and design
college graduates trying to start their careers and for professionals who
want to change the focus of their careers.
Recent graduates sometimes need additional guidance to launch
their art or design career. The transition from college life to a real world,
professional work experience can seem overwhelming to someone
just starting out. The economic turndown makes the transition even
more challenging for a recent graduate trying to find their first career
opportunity.
We begin our process with an initial assessment of the client’s situation.
We listen to them carefully, ask questions and review their work. An
effective plan of action is then developed. This plan is custom tailored to
address the specific needs of the client and to help them reach their goals
as quickly as is reasonable.
We help arrange internships that provide valuable work
experience and that may lead to employment opportunities.
Some recent graduates may need additional skill development or other
help to optimize their potential and to land their first job. Depending on
the client’s needs, our services may include:
> interview practice
> networking assistance
> informational interviewing guidance
> portfolio assessment and development
> computer skills enhancement
> organizational skills development
> internship and/or job contacts
When indicated, ADEA partners with other professionals to provide
clients the services they need to meet their goals.
Professional artists and designers—like many other professionals—
often reach a point in their careers where they want to make some type of
change. For instance, a designer may want to develop a business that
markets a product line they have created. Or perhaps a studio artist may
want to become an art therapist. There are endless possibilities.
It has been projected that a person may have 3 or more careers in their
lifetime—possibly even more. Career paths exist today that did not
exist even a few years ago, let alone 15, 20 or more years ago when
today’s senior level professionals were students.
When an artist or designer hits a career obstacle or a fork in the road, they
may lack the objectivity and perspective to fully evaluate their options.
We can help.
We recognize that each client’s situation is unique. We take time to ask
questions and to fully understand the client’s needs, interests and goals.
As a career direction emerges from our discussions, we develop a plan
to help the client meet their new objectives.
Depending on the client’s needs, our services may include:
> informational interviews
> indentification of educational resources
> additional skill development
> portfolio development
> identification of professional resources/organizations
> networking assistance
> business plan development
> identification of mentors
> marketing guidance
When indicated, ADEA partners with other professionals to provide
clients the services they need to meet their goals.

Client comments
“Patricia Boman's assessment of my artistic abilities were
right on point! In our initial
meeting regarding my potential
as a graphic designer, Patricia
was able to quickly identify
my talents regarding colors
and patterns.
She encouraged me to investi-
gate textile design as a more
fitting alternative to graphic
design. In my current position
as a Color Designer, I feel that
thanks to her guidance and
encouragement, I am on the
right career path.”

Patricia Boman provided me with professional feedback and counseling on my creative projects.
Her input helped me to feel more confidence in navigating my desire to take a new direction in my work. Her feedback deepened my understanding of my own creative process, and provided valuable resources and a broader view of my options. Overly, she was intuitive and genuinely helpful. I would recommend her highly.”

“Patricia Boman is one of the most influential people in my professional career.
Her valuable recommendations for the projects I have worked on, direction in finding a job and overall insightful knowedge in the field of graphic design have always proved to be right on target and have allowed me to achieve success in my career as a graphic designer.
Her constructive guidance has encouraged me to go beyond what I thought I was capable of and has allowed me to continually improve my skills–even when I thought I couldn't.
If given the opportunity, I would highly recommend Patricia to any individual who wants and needs credible, sound advice which will help them make the often critical, and always important career and life choices.”
